The attractions of Old Head of Kinsale and Fota Island are undoubted, with this mighty pair being the shining lights of Co.Cork and the first port of call for golfers visiting the far south of Ireland. But there is a third member that should not be overlooked: Cork Golf Club.

The course is found on the wonderfully named Little Island, which isn’t actually an island but a small peninsula protruding into the picturesque Lough Mahon. Originally a nine-holer designed with input from Tom Dunn and Harry Vardon, the course really came into its own in 1927 when Dr Alister MacKenzie took time out from his work at Lahinch to oversee a major upgrade.

The results were fairly spectacular, with the course boasting all manner of MacKenzie trademarks that litter his notable works at Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne as it weaves through glorious golfing terrain that features ancient quarries. The large, undulating greens, fast running fairways and free-form bunkers make playing Cork GC a very special experience, and when coupled with the spectacular views of Cork Harbour it’s easy to see why this course is so highly regarded in Ireland.
