  • 18 holes, par 71, 6,712 yards, Links

Just a short drive north of Cork, close to the world-renowned tourist attraction of the Blarney stone, is the friendly Blarney golf resort, a modern golf complex opened in 2006 to the tune of a €40 million investment.

The onsite John Daly Course is the first European creation by The Lion himself and this is without doubt a hidden gem golf course in Ireland. The heathland course overlooks the beautiful Shournagh Valley, a bucolic rural countryside where visiting golfers can forget all about the daily stresses of modern life and feel at one with nature.

The course itself is both enjoyable and at times testing. The testing includes a 601 yard par-5 although granted this is off the back tees. Strategically placed water hazards lurk agonizingly close to a number of greens including the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th, so pick carefully which greens to attack. The enjoyable is best epitomised by the 10th hole, a superb risk vs reward challenge where you’re presented with a very unique horse-shoe hole. Most golfers will find themselves aiming for the middle of the fairway and playing it safe, but it has been known to hit it high enough to cut off as much of the corner as possible – just beware the hidden water hazard.

All in all, Blarney Golf Resort is a fantastic place to stay on a golf vacation to Ireland, with both the bustling city centre of Cork close by and the famous tourist spot of Blarney Castle with its limestone rock which every visitor must kiss for good luck…maybe that’s what you should do before trying the impossible on the 10th hole!
