The Balcomie golf course is one of two courses which form part of the Crail Golfing Society, the seventh oldest golf club in the world dating back to 1786. In the county of Fife, just 11 miles south of St Andrews, Balcomie Links and its sister course Craighead are located on an exposed peninsula which skirts the tantalisingly close coastline. The choppy waters of the North Sea are a constant reminder of how close you are to nature. This is pure unabridged links golf, with a location to match.

Clearly with a location such as this, there are views to match. However, it’s not all about the vistas out across the open water, there is some top class golf to be played. Laid out by none other than Old Tom Morris himself, the course opened in 1895 and follows the lay of the land to immaculate effect.

Although some discerning golfers may turn their nose up at the par of 69, this merely obscures the challenge which lies ahead. There are very few easy shots with just a selection of the challenges on offer including blind approach shots to elevated greens, shots across rocky outcrops, greens appearing engulfed by gorse and par 4s which dogleg around sandy ridges.

The par-4 fifth hole, described by Sam Torrance as one probably the hardest par-4s in Scotland, is a classic risk vs reward hole, where the further you carry across the out of bounds on the right, the more likely you’ll reach the green in two!

The clubhouse is an absolute delight, perched high on a rock with superb panoramic views of the North Sea and out over the Firth of Forth. On a clear day, you can see the East Lothian coastline off past the Isle of May. Picture yourself stood on the outdoor deck, drink in hand whilst watching in sadistic glee as other fellow golfers attempt the tricky par-3 eighteenth hole – this is the perfect place to stop post-round and a great place to golf when visiting nearby St Andrews.
