Just half an hour’s drive south of Glasgow is a hotbed of golf on Ayrshire’s rugged coastline, which includes amongst others the time-honoured Prestwick Golf Club. One of the oldest golf courses in the world, Prestwick golf was not only the inaugural Open Championship host venue, it has hosted the tournament on no less than 24 occasions, of which the last was back in 1925 when the American Jim Barnes finished on top.

This stretch of Ayrshire coastline is perfect golfing terrain as proven by some of Prestwick’s more illustrious neighbours which include Royal Troon, Turnberry, Western Gailes and many others.

The course at Prestwick stretches northwards from the clubhouse across a wide expanse of undulating dunes interspersed amongst wild out-crops of gorse best avoided. The opening holes are certainly no let off, with a railway line running parallel to the 1st hole demanding accuracy off the tee, the par-5 third hole with its deep bunkers, the 4th hole a par-4 with out of bounds and the Pow burn running alongside it and to top it all off, the 5th hole, a par-3 called ‘Himalayas’ which requires the visiting golfer to hit a blind green whilst avoiding a significant sand dune. Add to this the battering winds which come eastwards, needless to say this is a true links experience.

But to juxtapose these brutal playing conditions are stunning panoramic views out across the North Sea, with on a good day, the imposing Isle of Arran visible on the horizon. The course lends itself to a more strategic golfer and rewards accurate strategic play. Don’t pull out the driver and hit and hope…

The Clubhouse is a traditional affair with memorabilia and old historical pictures scattered throughout. The Dining room and Smoke room are both accessible to visitors although the appropriate level of attire is expected.

An Ayrshire golf vacation is an absolute must for any fanatical golfer, particularly those with an appreciation for the historical side of the game. Prestwick golf club ticks all these boxes as well as offering a fine golfing challenge. Considered one of Scotland’s best golf courses and regularly ranked in the Top 100 golf courses in the UK & Ireland, make sure you add Prestwick golf course to your next Scottish golf itinerary.
